And he answered, "Yes, I know be still." (3) Then the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he said, "Yes, I know be still." (4) Elijah said to him, "Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. (2) Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here please, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. Let's look at this.Ģ Kings 2:1-5 And it came about when the LORD was about to take up Elijah by a whirlwind to heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. God is actually saying something here through Elijah's last journey to these significant places and they all mean specific things. So we come to his last journey and God directs him to travel to four specific places which I believe represent spiritual truths that need to be learned. And the way that he is caught up to heaven is a great picture and type of the rapture as we shall see. It is a radical event that is going to happen in the life of this prophet. Yes, because of that failure there was a judgement that came upon him because God said to him 'Listen, you are going to have to train Elisha because he is going to take your place.' However, despite the weaknesses and failings of Elijah, God still uses him during these five years and his end is an absolutely glorious one. It is so encouraging to me that even though a man may fail, God can still use him. If God had granted this prayer, then we wouldn't have the five years between then and now. You may remember that Elijah had earlier run from Jezebel and asked God to take his life. ![]() In this study we are in 2 nd Kings Chapter 2 and it is Elijah's last journey. However, he did all that he could to escape the coming judgement upon him, even disguising himself and asking King Jehoshaphat to pretend to be him in battle! But then the Bible says that a man drew a bow at random and fired a shot into the air - not really knowing where he was firing, and it killed Ahab! ![]() Last time we looked at the death of Ahab and how he partially repented of his wicked deeds after Elijah spoke the words of God to him. He will never be without witnesses, even if they be but a small remnant. We are going to continue with our study of Elijah. It may have a kind of gloomy appeal to think that we alone are left, but the Lord has His own scattered here and there even if we are not aware of them. Our attention is also drawn to the fact that while there was a day when Elijah was sure he was the only one left to bear witness, he was wrong. Far from being “conformed” to that world, Elijah confronted it with a power that came from God. Ahab and Jezebel formed a formidable partnership in evil and in hostility against all who refused to move in step with their idolatry. He lived in a culture and under a ruler with little sympathy for him or his God. The Lord’s care for his servant is recorded for our encouragement. This book takes us through the experiences of this man of God. We think back to the fearless man of Carmel and then see him as a man fleeing to the wilderness, running from Jezebel. ![]() Yet, as “a man subject to like passions as we are” (James 3:17), he appeals to our sense of our own weakness. Elijah challenges our faith and our often-shallow prayer life. Sandy Higgins has a track record of helpful studies on individuals and books of the Bible. No series on Bible Characters could possibly omit him. References to him in the New Testament serve to underline his distinction. Elijah is one of the towering figures of the Old Testament. In the study of Elijah, Sandy Higgins investigates Elijah and John Peterson gives us an in depth study on the character of Job. This is the fourth book in this series but the first that includes two character studies in one volume. The study of bible characters is one of the most accessible and appetizing ways of communicating spiritual truth: instead of heavy doctrine, it homes in on real men and women in daily life. ![]()
